As a young person, I was strongly and positively influenced by the writings of Edgar Cayce and the Seth Material. Their voices propelled me along a life-journey that included both inner and outer adventures of discovery. As I matured, I also grew into the grounded belief that we live in a time that could be known as one of the great ‘turnings of the ages,’ In the same way that our planet whirls and spins through the Universe, the Universe is acting upon us to turn and spin us, i.e., humanity, into a New Age.
However, at times, the Voices that I see concerning the turning of our Age often do not resonate with my grounding as a professional educator and participant in a day-to-day life of watching my children raise their children, working with social justice concerns, watching current politics, or just going to the grocery store to prepare good meals for my family. It is not that I do not believe these Voices. Edgar Cayce, Alice Bailey and the Tibetan, and others offer great insights into the Ageless Wisdom of the Universe. The abovementioned Voices, most of whom are channeled through a human vehicle, usually seem to be very grand, very large, and somewhat remote from my personal life. Kryon, Abraham, and Lazaris all send messages of joy and light to us, yet they do not specifically share in the difficulties of a troubled grandson. It could be that that these Voices are too large and too many for me to follow. It could be that I need a more visible path for my footsteps to follow as hmanity moves inexorably into the future.
As I continue to see and experience the transformative effects of Reiki in my own life as well as in the lives of my clients and students, I began to wonder at how our planetary transformation is occurring… from the ground up, so to speak. Perhaps through the promptings of my own Inner Voice, I was reminded of some information concerning the positive effect a group of regular meditators had upon the city where they lived. I went on a search through a variety of books upon my shelf and in my Kindle, and this is what I found.
“In 1972, 24 cities in the United States with populations over 10,000 experienced meaningful changes in their communities when as few as one percent (100 people) participated. “ (loc.292)
This information is shared by Gregg Braden (2006) in Secrets of the Lost Mode of Prayer: The Hidden Power of Beauty, Blessing, Wisdom, and Hurt published by Hay House, Inc. He goes on to describe an international peace project that was reported in The Journal of Conflict Resolution in 1988. Braden continues, “researchers were able to identify how many people are needed to share the experience of peace before it is mirrored in their world. The number is the square root of one percent of the population.” (loc. 296). This tiny, tiny number is verified again and again throughout the related links to this study vetted by at least 40 research projects in numerous countries around the world (http://www.worldpeacegroup.org) .
The original project was based on the practice of Transcendental Meditation introduced by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. The original claim that when the group of meditators reached 1% of the city’s population, negative social trends were reversed. Issues such as crime rates, emergency calls, suicides, accidents, and even alcohol consumption were reduced. This phenomenon was substantiated and replicated many times. These are wonderful claims, and many of us may wonder how we might find that like-minded community of similarly trained meditators in the ratio of 1% of the population in order to positively affect our communities.
My thoughts move quickly to Reiki practitioners. But first, a few other morsels of good news! As our global transformation proceeds, we find that “not all studies involve expert meditators.” (Flaxman, G. & Flook, L, Ph.D. , n.d., “Brief Summary of Mindfulness Research” http://marc.ucla.edu/workfiles/pdfs/marc-mindfulness-research-summary.pdf ) Their research points to the benefits of mindfulness training and even short-term meditation training on stress regulation, anxiety, and successful social relationships. They cite specifically Jon Kabat-Zinn and the Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MSBR) form of intervention. Their research also cites the implementation of various mindfulness trainings in the educational system including breath awareness, yoga, tai chi, mindful awareness, and Transcendental Meditation. As a result of this kind of intervention, significant characteristics can be observed in children’s self-regulatory abilities, calmness, connection to nature, attention and social skills. A quick Google search on ‘mindfulness in schools’ generates hundreds of links for scholarly articles, organizations that work in these directions, and the benefits of mindfulness training for all. I believe the significance of these trends is that our Earth’s transformation is being affected by the sheer numbers of people who are moving in the directions of mindfulness and meditation.
There is a fascinating website online that shows a dynamic interactive meter of the current world population. ‘Births today’ and ‘births this year’ tick constantly upward while ‘deaths’ of the day and year tick their numbers more slowly. On February 11, 2016 at 5.46 p.m. Mountain Time, USA, the population of the world was 7,401,256,543 and climbing steadily (http://www.worldometers.info/world-population/ ). Knowing that the population of the world broke the 6 billion mark in the late 20th Century, the realization of how quickly our population has approached 7.5 billion is a sobering thought.
Gandhi clearly stated, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” When I consider the current population of the world and place it alongside the idea of transformation by the numbers, I begin to wonder how one person can even imagine making a difference. Yet, I also believe that global transformation is happening as each of us embraces the changes that help create the healing journey for ourselves and for others. For me and for those who are reading this article, our journey towards wholeness embraces the path of Reiki, and many of us will utilize Holy Fire practices along the way.
When I teach Reiki I and II, students are frequently amazed by the fact that there are over 4 million Reiki practitioners in the world and at least 1 million Reiki Masters. (W. Rand, 2011, Reiki -The Healing Touch, First and Second Degree Manual, p. 25.) When we receive the monthly notice for the World Peace Card Meditations, we are reminded that there have been over 351,000 downloads of the cards, which are used in peace meditations and peace grid practices. We are now ready to set these numbers beside the pre-determined ‘magic number” of Braden’s information. While 1% of the 7.4 billion population number comes in at 74 million, there is another number noted in the studies. As the like-minded meditators come together in their practice, the cumulative effect is enhanced. It is possible that the vibrations of the Earth are positively affected by as little as the square root of 1% of a 7 billion world population. This ‘magic number’ like-minded practitioners who could effectively change the world is …9,300 (http://www.worldpeacegroup.org/super_radiance.html ).
When we add Holy Fire Reiki to the discussion, another dimension opens up. Those of us who have embraced Holy Fire and have worked with its transformative energy can attest to the powerful changes that have taken place in our Reiki practices and in our lives. According to the ICRT Holy Fire Student List (http://www.reikiwebstore.com/HolyFireStudentList.cfm ), there are currently 2,331 Holy Fire Reiki Masters who are qualified to teach Holy Fire to others. Their locations around the globe range from Argentina to Egypt, Lebanon to Australia, with England, Scotland, France and others nations noted. The bulk of these teachers and practitioners are in the US, and I am happy to be among them. Each and every time I find myself in a Holy Fire session, or a Holy Fire teaching situation, and many times, as I simply follow my daily path through life and the grocery store, I can feel the transformations taking place. I can feel the pulsing of my own energy field as it expands with Reiki energy and reaches out to others as we walk through this world together.
To know and to feel that each of us is part of a Great Transformation that is taking place on this planet is a wonderful gift. While there are many Voices worth listening to, we each have our own Inner Voice that is connected to Divine Spirit and can be depended upon to guide us. When we are also connected with Reiki and Holy Fire, we can be sure that our personal transformations are indeed part of the groundwork for the Universal transformation of our world. The Power of One is magnified through the Power of Reiki, and together, these numbers will transform our world.
